If there is a simple way to do it, I am willing to hear about it.
The first step is to see if it's really needed. If the helpers as
they are now are not breaking the guidelines for legacy
compatibility ...

... then there's no problem. If they *are* being broken, tell me
where, and your suggestion for patching.
In addition, it appears that setting a default MIME type of
"application/xhtml+xml" would be unwise; I'm glad I mentioned that I
was toying with the idea, so that you could warn me about MSIE's poor
compliance to the standard.
