We're trying to be standards-compliant and future-compatible as much  
as we can ... and the future appears to be XHTML.  That's all the  
thinking I've done on it; did you have specific reasons for  
preferring HTML4?

I've seen this very good article many times before; thanks for  
linking it here.  Was there a section in particular that you wanted  
to note, or was this just to make sure we were aware of it?

The "application/xhtml+xml" mime type is of special importance, and  
I'm toying with the idea of adding it as a header() in the default  
Solar layout files.
