For the fader/lightbox thingy there are equivalent (and smaller)
alternatives to Lightbox, but it makes sense to stick with what Solar
adopts.

Aren't you using the minimized version of prototype/scriptaculous?
Note that there's a scripts-min directory in /Solar/App/Public. For
production, you should use those scripts; they are much smaller.
Anyway, as said they will add at least 80kb to your page load.
