I think you can get phpize from the corresponding -dev package (ie
php5-dev_5.2.0-0.dotdeb.3_amd64.deb). Its hard to install pecl
extensions otherwise :)
I think that's still the convention in debian (see the list of files
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/devel/php5-dev) although instead of
calling it phpize in debian its phpize5
I remember it took me a lot of pain and googling to figure this out
myself, I hope I can save anyone else that same trouble.
