Agreed -- if you want to stay current with PHP, relying on package  
distribution for Debian/Gentoo/Ubuntu/Fedora ... whatever -- you  
simply have to build it yourself.

Rely on packages for as many of PHP's dependencies as you can, but  
unless you want to live 6-8 months behind the curve, you have to  
build PHP itself on your own.
